WHO LET THE DOGS OUT

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT

Dogs have been receiving several mentions in the media recently, howbeit for various reasons. From Buhari, the dog who earned its painful death because of the name it was given by its owner, to the one that got several iPhone 7 from its Chinese owner (unbelievable right?). I have decided to share with you the encounter of a NEPA official with Sunkanmi’s dog, Roxie. This will lead me to address Rabies as a major societal fear, in cases of dog bites.
The NEPA officials are staff of the Electricity providers who go to different houses taking readings from Electricity meters, to calculate the bills and distribute them to consumers. (Definition is for the posh individuals who were born into the era of prepaid meters). Nepa officials are often prone to public humiliation while discharging their duties.
On this faithful day- rather unpleasant for the NEPA official, he walked into Sunkanmi’s compound without knocking on the gate. Calling out to the occupants of the house, it was Roxie (A female German Shepherd Dog) that decided to answer his call since she was the only one at home.  Roxie was a very smart dog and was also unfriendly with strangers. I had known her for 3 years, yet I never approached her despite my frequent visits to their house. She was that brutal.
On seeing the monstrous-looking dog baring its teeth, its growling mixed with fearful barking, he made an attempt to run out of the compound. He was almost successful, but suddenly the dog grabbed the helm of his trousers and was determined not to let it go, just like the biblical sick woman who touched the helm of the Lord's garment. Pulling at the trousers like an Olympian going for gold, Roxie ripped the trouser into pieces. The NEPA man had his boxers to thank; else he would have had to return to his office without any piece of clothing covering his groin. The experience was really humiliating.
(The NEPA officials responded to this event by disconnecting light supply to this house for a very long time. While the focus of this article is not to determine if this action is right or wrong, it is important that we deduce salient lessons from this event.
Dog bites often come with lots of dire consequences ranging from large areas of wounds on the body, to fractures, to the emotional trauma. The worst fear of most victims is Rabies disease. You don’t want to picture yourself, as it is often said, barking like a dog in 7 days’ time.

The rabies disease is caused by a virus that invades the central nervous system and disrupts its function. It is transmitted via the saliva of infected animals and Yes, Dog bite is a major pre disposing factor to Rabies disease. Each year, rabies kills more than 55,000 people around the world especially in Asia and Africa. Amazing that such numbers of people die from dog bites isn't it?

An individual becomes infected with the virus when bitten by an infected animal or contact with the saliva of an infected animal whether alive or dead. You cannot get rabies from the blood, urine or faeces of an infected animal or from just touching or petting an animal.
Symptoms of rabies disease include Fever, headache and general discomfort. This can then progress into anxiety, confusion, abnormal behaviour and hallucinations. The chances of contacting rabies disease from an individual are extremely low except in rare cases of organ reception from an infected person.

DOGS AND CHILDREN
Research has shown that children less than 15 years of age are the most frequent victims of dog bites. This is explained in the fact that children are not seen as authority figures by most dogs and most of them enjoy teasing dogs. As a child, I was never the type to let a sleeping dog lie. I often enjoyed taunting dogs by imitating their barks or throwing items at them. It brought a mixed feeling of bravery and terror, though I was never bitten, other kids were not so lucky. Children often stare at dogs or approach them without caution which often startles dogs. The dogs react by barking and most children begin to scream and run. This is often interpreted by dogs as a prey trying to escape and they engage in a hot pursuit and inflict multiple bites on the children.
To prevent Rabies from dog bites, it is important to educate children with the following points;
·         Do not approach unrestrained dogs even if you know the owner.
·         Don’t scream and run away when you see dogs. Try to maintain a calm disposition. If you must retreat, do it calmly.
·         Don’t touch, carry or hug strange dogs except when you have been permitted by the owner and this must be under his/her watchful eyes.
·         Don’t taunt or tease dogs. Let the sleeping dog lie
·         Lower your voices around dogs and avoid disturbing dogs when they are eating, sleeping or ill. Dogs could bite even their owners when they are in pain.
RESPONSIBILITY OF DOG OWNERS
Dog owners also have a lot of responsibility to prevent cases of dog bites. They should also do the following:
·         Ensure timely and adequate vaccination of all dogs.
·         Dogs should not be left alone with children that are less than 10 years old.
·         When living in a shared compound, dogs should be restrained or housed at a location that is not easily accessible to strangers especially children.
·         For prospective dog owners who have little children, it is important to socialise your puppies with children. Let the dog get used to staying around children.
·         Have an indicator hanging outside your compound to notify visitors that you own a dog.

What Should I do when bitten by a dog?
·         Wash the site thoroughly with soap and water for at least 5 minutes.
·         Contact a qualified health care provider. He will ask you questions like;
o   Do you know the owner of the dog and what is the vaccination status?
o   Circumstance of Bite incident – did the bite occur because the dog was provoked or unprovoked
o   Does the dog have a history of aggressive behaviour, recent presence of wild animals in the neighbourhood?
o   He will then decide on the treatment regimen to follow. This often entails getting an HRIG and rabies vaccine shot on Day 0- day of bite. You will subsequently receive 3 other shots of rabies vaccine on days 3, 7 and 14 following the bite. For individuals that have received Pre-exposure vaccine, HRIG will not be administered. You will only require two shots of Rabies Vaccine on day 0 and day 3.
It is important that we ensure prompt vaccination and adequate socialization of our dogs. I am sure you don’t want to have your power supply disconnected like my friend Sunkanmi.

PET CORNER

As Omotola got out of her apartment that morning, she noticed her neighbour, Patrick had gotten a Boerboel puppy. She smiled as she admired the dog. Its big brown eyes, with the tongue dangling from its mouth, was an amazing sight to behold. Still looking the puppy, Omotola decided she was going to get one herself. So, later in the day, she stopped at a Pet center, and bought a seven-week old puppy of the same breed.

To her dismay however, four months later, Frodo, her dog weighed less than 15kg. The outlines of his ribs were prominent, and on close observation, Omotola noticed ticks as well. When Frodo started being anorexic, she panicked and ran to Patrick whose puppy had being doing well since its purchase.

Usually, most pet parents do not realise that keeping these lovely animals, come with the responsibility of ensuring their health and welfare. After providing feeding and housing for these amazing creatures, other necessary ideals may be forgotten. Here, I would make a list of three of the required things your pets would need.

Registration at a certified Veterinary hospital: At the clinic, qualified Vets would ensure your Pet's vaccination and de worming is updated. Thorough clinical examination are performed routinely, tests carried out and appropriate drugs administered. I consider this a very important step, because timely vaccination prevents enormous hospital bills, from diseases that could have been prevented.

A personal grooming kit: There's nothing as annoying as pets with overgrown nails, smelly hair coat and dirty aural canals. Buying your pet's grooming kit, enables you do the necessary grooming practices at your leisure. It prevents your animal from looking unkempt and you, from being irresponsible.

A Vet-recommended anti-parasitic agent: When this solution is used according to given instructions, you can be sure your pet is free from ticks, fleas and myasis worms.

There are other tips regarding pet health and welfare, ensure proper and timely consultation with your Veterinary Doctor to keep your pets in a healthy state. Remember that having a pet can be fun, and enjoyable if proper care is taken. Healthy Pets make a happy and fulfilled owner.

TIPS FOR POULTRY FARMERS DURING RAINING SEASON

NOW THAT THE RAIN IS HERE!!!
Every weather condition has its attending effect on every sphere of life. The rains have started pouring down in large volumes and we all know that there is still more to come. Here, we will be focusing on what the poultry farmer needs to know and do in the raining season.

POULTRY MANAGEMENT IN RAINY SEASON
Rains can fall for varying periods ranging from few hours to almost throughout the day especially in the southern part of the country. Farmers have to take the following necessary steps to ensure that the weather condition does not adversely affect their production.
  • HOUSING – The poultry house should not permit easy entry to rain waters. The roof should be properly checked and all leakages should be promptly repaired. Use of polythene and tarpaulin might be necessary to temporarily cover the pen during heavy rainfalls.
  • SURROUNDINGS – The poultry surrounding should not support stagnation of water. Efforts should be made to allow adequate run-off of rain water to prevent mosquito breeding. Weeds tend to grow faster in this period, thus consistent efforts should be deployed towards controlling them as they could provide breeding spots for harmful reptiles like snakes and scorpions.
  • LITTERS – The poultry floor should be kept as dry as possible. Efforts should be made to prevent spillage of water and entry of rain water. Once the litter is wet (forms into a ball shape when moulded with the hand), it should be replaced promptly. Wet litters often predispose birds to coccidiosis and worm infestation. Farmers should ensure adequate storage of dry litters as this is usually very difficult once the rain begins.
  • FEED STORAGE – Farmers are to ensure that feeds are stored in areas where they will not get wet. Feeds are preferably kept on wooden platforms at a reasonable distance to the floor and walls. Wet feeds favour the growth of fungus and mold which predispose birds to afflatoxicosis; a disease which causes reduced egg production, poor feed conversion rate and death ultimately. It is essential that feed contains adequate level of toxin-binders to prevent this condition.

Farmers should avoid buying feeds that have spent a long time in the retailers’ warehouse. Farmers who make their own feeds should be aware that some feed ingredients like Oysters become scarce during raining season. Thus they should be adequately stored to prevent shortage.
  • There will be an increase need for the application of germicides and disinfectants to prevent mosquitoes, flies and other insects that can serve as vectors for disases as their population often increase during this season.
  • Vitamins and immune boosters should be administered in water or feeds at the recommended dosage to reduce the stress that accompanies change in weather conditions
  • Adequate warmth should also be provided for birds to avoid overcrowding especially in the brooding pens.

In conclusion, farmers are to keenly observe their birds for any unusual sign such as weakness, sneezing, inappetence and promptly report to a qualified veterinarian who will then make necessary recommendations. Prompt detection and reporting of abnormal signs enhance easy and cost-effective management of disease conditions.

This military dog with his identity withheld is a trained war dog which has gone for several battles.

One fateful day, during an ongoing war, his hindlimb was shot which broke the tibia and fibula to the degree of been un-repaired which later resulted to the amputation of the leg. The dog's trainer which happened to be the master said "my dog must walk", so he requested for a robotic leg for his dog and they both lived happily ever after. #ForTheLoveOfAnimals #MyDogMustWalk #LoveYourPet #PetLovers

HOW DO I POTTY TRAIN MY DOG?

Most dog owners complain about their dog messing around everywhere with excretes (faeces and Urine) which makes them say words like, “don’t dare bring that dog into the house”, “I’m tired of cleaning up faeces every morning”.
To relieve you of the stress of 24hours non-stop excretes cleaning, it is advisable to potty train your dog which is always easier when your dog is still at the puppy stage.
House training your puppy is about consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. The goal is to instill good habits and build a loving bond with your pet.
It typically takes 4-6 months for a puppy to be fully house trained, but some puppies may take up to a year. There are some factors you must consider also during potty training;
  1.  Size of your dog - For instance, smaller breeds have smaller bladders and higher metabolisms and require more frequent trips to excrete.
  2.  Your puppy's previous living conditions. You may find that you need to help your puppy break old habits in order to establish more desirable ones.
Don’t worry if there are setbacks during the course of training, as long as you continue a management program that includes taking puppy out at the first sign he needs to go and offering him rewards, he would learn.

When should I start Potty Training my Puppy?

Experts recommend that you begin house training your puppy when he is between 12weeks and 16weeks old. At that point, he has enough control of his bladder and bowel movements to learn to hold it.
If your puppy is older than 12 weeks when you bring him home and he’s been eliminating in a cage (and possibly eating his waste), house training may take longer. You will have to reshape the dog’s behavior with encouragement and rewards.

Steps for Housetraining Your Puppy

Experts recommend confining the puppy to a defined space, whether that means in a crate, in a room, or on a leash. As your puppy learns that he needs to go outside to do his business, you can gradually give him more freedom to roam about the house.

When you start to house train, follow these steps:

  1.  Designate an area or spot you want your dog to always excrete
  2.  Keep the puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals if the time scheduled has elapse.
  3.  Take puppy out to eliminate first thing in the morning and then once every 30 minutes to an hour at the designated spot.
  4.  Always take him outside after meals or when he wakes from a nap. Make sure he goes out last thing at night and before he’s left alone.
  5.  Take puppy to that designated spot each time to do his business. His scent will prompt him to go.
  6.  Stay with dog until he/she finishes the business.
  7.  After your puppy eliminates, praise him or give him a treat. A walk around the neighborhood is a nice reward too.

Signs that your puppy needs to eliminate
  • Whining
  •  Circling
  •  Sniffing
  •  Barking
  •  If your puppy is unconfined, barking or scratching at the door, these are all signs he needs to go. Take him out right away.

Do's and Don’ts in Potty Training Your Puppy
·      Punishing your puppy for having an accident is a definite no-no. It teaches your puppy to fear you.
·      If you catch your puppy in the act, clap loudly so he knows he’s done something unacceptable, then take him outside by calling him or taking him gently by the collar. When he’s finished, praise him or give him a small treat.
·      If you found the evidence but didn’t see the act, don’t react angrily by yelling or rubbing his nose in it. Puppies aren’t intellectually capable of connecting your anger with their accident.
·      Clean up accidents with an enzymatic cleanser rather than an ammonia-based cleaner to minimize odors that might attract the puppy back to the same spot.
